In the final match of the Island Furniture League regular season before the finals, Laguna took on newcomers Thanyapura News Tigers (TNT) on Sunday 29 April 2012 at the Alan Cooke Ground.
Laguna demonstrated once again the importance of batting their full allocation of overs, which has been one of their fundamentals to their success this season, posting a score of 5 for 227. Their innings was anchored by opener Darren Shaw who batted for 3 hours to post a score of 76 runs with all other batsmen providing solid support. TNT meanwhile were bowled out for a total of 154 from 33 overs in a competitive and good spirited match which finished in a monsoon downpour at the end of the TNT innings.
The result saw Laguna finish as minor premiers in the league being defeated only once all season which should give them confidence going into the finals against the Village who have been the other form team this season. However, as recent results have demonstrated, any team can win on their day.
After winning the toss, Laguna elected to bat, with intentions of keeping wickets in hand early on in order to set a platform for the latter part of the innings. Opener Bill Stahmer (21) showed signs of a return to form striking the ball well until having his stumps broken by an in-swinging ball from Roshan Jayasuriya with the score on 40. However, Darren Shaw (76) and Andrew Cole (30), the leagues leading run scorer, then joined forces to post a solid 87 run partnership, before Cole was dismissed for only the second time this season with score on 127 in the 25th over. Vice captain, Sameer Khan (35), then joined Shaw and showed a timely return to form, posting another solid partnership of 80 runs before he was adjudged lbw from the tight bowling of Paul Lattimore with the score on 207 in the 37th over. Lijo Jose (13) provided some fire power in the last couple of overs to advance the score to 5 for 227 at the end of the 40th over. Pick of the bowlers for TNT were Paul Lattimore (2 for 31) and G Leonard (2 for 34).
TNT got off to a cautious and steady start and were looking to go to the drinks break without loss until a brilliant piece of fielding saw Bruce Whitehead with a direct hit during a quick single to run out Dane Halpin (10) in the 8th over with the score on 26. However, lightning struck twice for TNT when fellow opener Roshan Jayasuriya (19) was also run out when Sami Ullah fired in the ball over the top of the bails at deep backward point when Jayasuriya attempted to return for a second run in the 12th over with the score on 59. A middle order batting collapse then ensued with 4 wickets falling for 30 runs and at 6 wickets down for 89 runs in the 21st over, it was looking like an early finish as dark storm clouds began to surround the ground. However, the TNT lower order batsmen showed some dogged resistance with Garry Carrick (12), Simon Samaan (12 not out) and David Robers (25) taking the total along to 154 before the innings eventually came to a conclusion during heavy rain in the 33rd over. Pick of the bowlers for Laguna were Sami Ullah (2 for 15), Lijo Jose (2 for 28), Bruce Whitehead (2 for 22) and Sameer Khan (2 for 44).
Man of the match was Sameer Khan.
So at the completion of the regular season matches the league table ended with Laguna on top with 32 points followed by the Village on 30 points. They will meet in the final on Sunday 13 May to determine who are this years champions. Playoff for 3rd and 4th will take place this weekend on Sunday 6 May between former champions Island Cricket Club and Patong with both teams looking to salvage some pride after an up and down season.
