The Village Now Serious Title Contenders PDF Print E-mail

The eleventh match of the Island Furniture League 2011-2012 season saw a battle between current 35 over champions Patong Cricket Club (PCC) and the surprise packet of the season, the undefeated Village Cricket Team (VCT), at the ACG on Sunday 12 February 2012.

With Patong keen to notch up another win to sit on top of the table, the Village were confident of maintaining their unbeaten run to displace them and show they were a force to be reckoned with. The Village were comfortable victors after batting first and setting a target of 173 for Patong, who failed in their quest, being bowled out for 90. The Village now commands the respect of all teams and look set to be one of the favorites to take the title this season should they continue with their current form.

The Village won the toss and elected to bat first and set a target for Patong to chase. Despite an early set back losing opener Kevin Quilty (0) in only the second ball of the innings, fellow opener Justin White (22) and captain Martin Foster (10) managed to push the score along to 36 before both fell shortly before the 10 over drinks break. However, Divan Mydeen (16) and Tim Ross (42) pushed the score along before Mydeen eventually fell with the score on 70 in the 18th over. Craig Patterson (11) and Mark Ashman (9 not out) also offered some good support to Tom Gordon (32) who scored at a run-a-ball before he was eventually dismissed in the 38th over. Some tight bowling from Patong had contained the Village who were all out for 172. Pick of the bowlers for Patong were Seemant Raju (3 for 36), Kishor Jhagta (2 for 30), Manesh Sadarangani (1 for 22) and Anil Rawat (1 for 30).

The Patong innings got off to a dismal start losing their top 4 batsmen cheaply due to an impressive bowling spell by Divan Mydeen and Craig Patterson. At 4 wickets down for 17 runs after only 6 overs, Patong were on the verge of collapse. However, Manesh Sadarangani (15), Anil Rawat (27) and captain Richard Folds (22) stablised the innings and took the score to 89 after 20 overs. However, the drinks break did not serve them well as when play resumed, another collapse set in with Patong losing their last 5 wickets for only 1 run and the misery ended when they were bowled out for 90 runs in just 23 overs. Pick of the bowlers for the Village were an outstanding Craig Patterson (6 for 17) and Divan Mydeen (2 for 21).

Man of the match was Craig Patterson with Tim Ross and Tom Gordon picking up 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

The Village sits on top of the table and remains undefeated after having played three matches followed closely by Patong.
